The end of 2006(General)
written by bigbee on 15:06:05 31/12/2006
Hello all,

just a few hours away to begin a new year and to look back at another year of our life. I hope 2006 has brought all the things you hoped for and if not that 2007 will bring them. To me it was a year of stability. I worked from day one uptill now and found finally back some routine in my life (something I lost and missed while I was a student). There had been some change though, but all in a positive way: my girlfriend succesfully switched jobs. (And for the geekier visitor: my site is renewed). So for 2007 I wish you all the best for you, your family and friends! May all your wishes come through!

Sincerely

bb

ps: my computer is fixed and for my Xmas I received the fabulous game World of Warcraft. So I know what to do in the evenings: hunting as a dwarvish warrior in the lands of Azeroth (you can find me in the realm of Ansulon as Bigbee)

Hello all,

last wednesday I finally experienced one of the most common problems in computing: the harddrive of my pc crashed. Uptill than, I had only had that experience once with a heavily used, 5 year old HD. Apparently those 5 year are a reference, because my pc has also reached that blessed age and the loud "tsjak" when I try to read something from the device doesn't predict any good. I was aware of the fact that besides fans, cd-dvd players, HD's are the last mechanical pieces in a pc, subducted to wear (on it's bearings and needle-moving arm), but I didn't foresee the break down of a 'new' HD that soon. I have also a HD in my machine which is 2 years older and of the same brand and it still works well. Ok, it hums a lot but at war that old soldier is ready for duty.
So there I was, literally lost (a lot of data). But luckily stuff like Knoppix and SuSE live cd's are out there, so I was able to recover a lot (although my precious background picture will be buried with the HD :'-( ). So a week before my Xmas holiday I don't have a decent computer at my disposal...
Although..., I didn't mention I have recently bought me some server equipment. I'm now the proud owner of 2 IBM netfinity's and 1 HP DL360 G3. The IBM are powered by 2 or 4 Intel xeon 550Mhz cpu's. The HP is powered by 2 2.8Ghz Xeon cpu's. I'm planning to develop some multithreaded applications on the IBM's (hence the multiprocessor setup). The HP I will use as replacement of my 233Mhz Celeron machine used to parse statistics and proxyserver. (I consider it to be powerfull enough). The only problem is that it makes a hell of a noise. The small high rpm fans are producing more noise than your average vacuum cleaner. So if my pc will not be fixed I will think about a "noise reducing closset" to put my powerserv in. Only problem is I have to think about airflow, because those cpu's can get really hot, really fast :)
Anyway, I have already a busy holiday planned and my HD crash adds to the pile of to-do's :)

Cheers and big it up for the raindeer!

New updates of the boincstats(Boinc)
written by bigbee on 11:20:40 02/12/2006
Hello all,

I've made a list of updates to give the db-server a break, increase performance of the site and enable me to parse more than 32 projects.
I've adapted the signatures and signature-creator so they will support the upcoming projects. Due to the 32bit limit of ints in php I had to add some code so the functionality of the stat signatures remains as it is.
The caching of some heavy-loaded pages is now possible, to decrease the stress on the db and increase the performance of the stats.
The number of teams per project has been limited to 1000. I've compared db-performance with +40k teams and concluded that overal performance is more important. So if you want your team in the teamstats of a specific project, get in the top 1000 :)
2 projects are added : ABC and proteins@home.
I will create an overview page of the competitions with the competing teams and their score.

A mouthfull of adjustments, butstatslovers like me, love'em :)

Cheerz ladz! And respect the polar bears!

Historical event!(Boinc)
written by bigbee on 15:24:22 11/11/2006
Hello all,
last week a historical event happened in the belgian distributed computing scene: Boinc.be and Belgian Mooo Farm joined their efforts! In this way we have created a very powerfull team, which can put Belgium on the map on some well known DC(boinc-based) projects!
During the last days many BMF-members switched teams (as can be seen here)
This event also introduced the concept of subteams in our community. For the moment all former members of BMF have joined the [BMF] subteam. Our other team is [BAT] which is the assault team of boinc.be.
I've created a new statspage on which you can see the stats of all the subteams (here) and some other pages will follow, which will give stats of internal competitions between [BAT] and [BMF]. If you feel like joining the n°1 boinc-team of Belgium, look at boinc.be! If you want to join a subteam or take part in a competition for a subteam, just put '[BAT] ' or '[BMF]' into your accountname! More info on our forum

Grtz
